"Boutique Hotel Aims to Please"

4.0/5

Front Desk Mgr Dava is friendly and helpful. I would give her 5 stars. The King Deluxe room is on the small side if you are staying for any length of time. For me, it was 5 nights so I was glad to be alone. The LG HD television is good; the bed and pillows very comfortable; the wing chair sort of ok. I was shown 4 different rooms before settling in. I do not like dark rooms. If you have street facing room you will get the most light which helps if you are trapped indoors during multiple rain storms. However, when Bruins fans stream out onto the streets hooting and hollering at 1:30 am from TD Garden it can disturb the sleep. Another sleep interruption comes from not bolting or somehow muffling the noise the large wooden headboards make if your neighbor has an active bed. Another possible problem if sharing room would be lack of exhaust fan in bathroom. I assume it is some sort of passive air return system in the building but there is no fan. Am I being too fussy? Boston Hotel prices are rather steep, and one can find more space and amenities in many cities at these price levels. There are extra perks for Kimpton members. The wine reception gives little choice, but still appreciated at end of day from 5-6 pm. I cannot recommend the Ruby Red restaurant off lobby, but my son and I did eat there because all the bars were packed in the neighborhood on a Bruins game night. The salad special was horrid as were the pulled pork sliders and the $50+ tab for that including beer was hard to digest! Next door bar Porters has decent beer selection on tap and their chicken caesar salad is good enough for two to share with friendly service. If you are like me - you do not want to shower and dress to go to lobby for coffee. You want coffee before shower. When I checked out I asked if I could have had a coffee machine and Dava advised me they ARE available upon request - I could have had a Keurig in my room! Also...I could have asked them to empty all the beer and beverages they load the mini-fridge with and used it for my own food and beverages. As it was, it was difficult to fit a yogurt and side salad containers in the tiny fridge. You can use the computer in basement area to print your boarding pass without having to pay the usage fees. While the exercise room is small the equipment looks good. Location convenient to North Station T stop; easy walk to North End Italian restaurants. I might stay here again if price is right. The hotel does allow pets, so that is just another little warning for the allergic. I happen to like space and light, and this hotel is small and uses black and red in decor, thus hip and dark. There is a Subway a few doors up, Au Bon Pain across the street, a 7-11 store and CVS Pharmacy are all short walk.

"Exceeded expectation"

Excellent location. Picked hotel due to attending a concert at TD Garden. Wanted something close to the venue. I just assumed it would be a place to rest my head and that is about it due to the location. The hotel far exceeded expectation. Nathan, the bartender is outstanding and completely made the stay special. He catered to every request with a smile. From the desk clerk to the valet everyone was a 10 at customer service. Hotel was spotless and had great amenities. I will always stay at this hotel when in the area.

"Amazing Staff"

5.0/5

Wed, May 8, 2013 Fresno, California

My wife and I recently went to Boston and spent two nights at the Onyx and two nights at the Four Seasons. While both hotels were nice we definitley prefered the Onyx. The Onyx staff was fantastic! Dava and the rest of the staff treated us so well. We felt very welcome. The locaion is great if you want to go to the Garden or the North End. The only negative we found was the toilet paper. Next time we are in Boston we will stay at the Onyx

"Exceptional Experience Both During And After"

5.0/5

Sat, May 4, 2013 Moncton, Canada

I stayed at The Onyx in early March for one night for a Bruins game. This was the best hotel experiences I have ever had. The staff was welcoming even making a joke of the fact that I had accidentally listed myself as a Miss rather then Mr on my profile. they were more then happy to help with any request that we had during our stay. The Hotel was immaculate and the room was the nicest I have had the pleasure to stay in. The real WOW for me came in the last week. Two months after my stay I realized that I had left my Bruins jersey hanging in my hotel room closet. With very little hope I emailed The Onyx to see if by chance they had found it. Within a few hours I received an email from the front desk manager Dave Berman getting some more information from me. Then in another couple hours I got another email this time from Matthew O'Toole the Guest Services Manager advising me that they had found my jersey. I was sure this jersey was gone for good. The fact that they found it and held it speaks to the integrity of all involved and because of that I will ALWAYS stay at The Onyx when I go to Boston and will ALWAYS recommend it to my my friends and family. Thank You Onyx!

"Urban hip hotel with great location"

5.0/5

Tue, Apr 23, 2013 Dallas, Texas

Onyx is conveniently located in Downtown Boston, near the north end close to the TD Garden and not far from City Hall and the Federal Courthouse. If you are coming from Logan Airport, you can easily get to the hotel from the Blue Line to Bowdoin Station with a short 5-minute walk. Boston's subway (the "T") is easy to navigate for newcomers and is an affordable alternative to a taxi - one-way fares were $2.50 as of this writing. A free shuttle bus gets you from Logan to the train station. (Note: the Bowdoin Station closes at 6:30 PM weekdays, so if you come in later you will have to get off at the State Stret Station a few blocks further south. Or you can transfer to the Orange Line and take it to the North Station.) Rooms are small but comfortable. Even with a street view, things were quiet. The staff is very helpful and friendly. In cold or rainy weather, there aren't a tremendous number choices within walking distance, but there are some. You might want to use the T or catch a cab to get to places in downtown (Boylston, Newbury, etc.). The hotel does have its own restaurant if you don't feel like venturing out. Not a complaint, but the nightly rate is a bit on the high side, although it is in-line with other area hotels. And, of course, not as expensive as others (think Fairmont, St. Regis, etc.). I like it because it is not a large crowded hotel, If you are a Kimpton InTouch member, you get some, like a $10 gift card to "raid the minibar". There was also a complementary small bottle of red wine and two chocolates in the room uopn check-in. If you prefer a more European experience and want to avoid the big chains, Onyx is an excellent choice in Boston.
