"Fantastic location, modern & clean rooms"

We stayed at the HGI West 35th for two nights in May 2013. The hotel is located right at the subway exit of the 34th Street station from where you can go pretty much everywhere by using 7 lines (B/D/F/M & R/Q/N). Macy's is on the other side of Herald Square, about 100m from the hotel. We arrived early in the morning and our room wasn't ready (as we were expecting) but we were offered to leave our bags free of charge. We found this a good thing, as there are a lot of hotels in NY that now charge for this. When we returned the room was ready and was located on the 20th floor. The room assigned was bigger than average for New York, spotless clean and had a modern, new-looking and spacious bathroom. The room was very quiet, too. The bed was very comfortable, as usual in most Hilton properties. The wifi is free of charge which is always a nice touch. There is a restaurant on property for breakfast but we did not use it, so we cannot comment on the food. Coffee and tea are offered throughout the day in the lobby. The price was very competitive at about 200$ + tax. Given all these factors we would strongly suggest this property to anybody visiting New York.

"Finally a Hilton with free wifi"

Stayed for one night only (late booking paid 259 USD) and enjoyed the view of Empire State Building from my window. Clean room, well kept and a comfortable bed. Didnt have breakfast since it was not included and experienced a pleasant and accomodating staff. Location is excellent (just around the corner from Macy's and Broadway and a 10 min walk from Penn St Station with trolley) though the hotel is actually a bit hard to spot - no flags or signs visible unless you are actually standing almost outside it. The building is a bit set back from the rest of the buildings on the streeet. Aim for the sign of the Comfort Inn which is about 30 metres (100 ft) further down on the opposite side of the street - they have a clearly visible sign.

"Nice hotel, bad policy."

Having never stayed in NY before, I was aiming for a nice hotel near Times Square for the tourist experience. Of course, I wasn't aiming for the price tag. Once finding this hotel so close to Madison Square Garden, I booked as soon as I could. Location is excellent. Whilst a short taxi ride away from Times Square, this hotel is surrounded by Macy's and several sneaker stores (I'm a collector) and a very short walk away from the Empire State Building. As price was a concern, I opted for a view pointing away from the ESB, but it was still a pleasant view all the same. Especially on the evening/following morning after "Nemo" swept through. Unfortunately I had a hiccup on check in. They said they didn't have record of my booking. It didn't make too much sense to me, seeing as though I had my booking confirmation email printed and in hand. After and early morning flight from LA that arrived at 5pm, a late private driver picking us up from the airport and a busy trip to the hotel (not to mention the 14 hour flight we'd been on the day before), this wasn't exactly news I was happy to deal with. Eventually we were checked in, and once in our rooms I was able to turn my phone on and discover the email they'd sent - whilst I was in the air - that told me that my credit card had been declined. I was told I needed to contact them before a certain time - one that was also while I was in the air. I've stayed in a few hotels and have not once had an issue where they decided to cancel my booking based on charging a credit card when I wasn't even there to check in! The issue was my bank's fault but the ridiculous 'rules' the Hilton has for this kind of booking made the start of my trip very disheartening. I was on edge about the rest of the stay and worried I'd have similar issues with another Garden Inn hotel (which I'd thankfully pre-paid for) I was due at in two weeks' time. Garden Inns across America appear to have a standard breakfast option, continental or full buffet breakfasts on offer for a set price. For the price, it is cheaper to eat elsewhere however convenience tended to win out most mornings. The food isn't bad, but certainly not amazing. More than one occasion we saw wait staff pocketing the tips that belonged to other wait staff, and were reluctant to leave ours sitting on our table until our server returned to collect it. The rooms are clean and reasonably well kept. Beyond the check in troubles, service appeared to be fair.

My husband and I stayed here 4 nights from May 9-May 13. It was our first time to NYC and we came here for our 13-year anniversary. When we checked in, the hotel provided us delicious chocolates with a hand-written note congratulating us on our anniversary! I loved everything about this hotel. We were on the 30th floor in room 3003. It was a corner room, which made the room slightly bigger. Our view was of the Empire State Building just one block away! Macy's was also a block away. The staff was very polite, funny, professional. They made us Texans feel right at home in their home town. The shower was always hot with great water pressure. We never heard any noise outside of our room or from the streets. We slept like babies on their comfortable bed. We had the breakfast buffet one morning and it was great. A little pricey, but excellent choice of food. They cook your eggs anyway you want them. The subway is right by the hotel right outside their doors. Our hotel room was very clean. Times square was less than a 10-minute walk. We always felt really safe. Hope the staff enjoyed our mountain of left over food from Carmine's that we brought to them. We did it as a "thank you" for the kindness they showed us first-timers to NYC. I will defintely stay here again if we get the chance to come back. Note: Make sure to eat at the restaurant in the basement of Macy's. It's really good!
