"Great value for Atlantis"

4.0/5

Tue, Jun 18, 2013 Greensboro, NC

This was our second trip to Atlantis and staying at Harborside had a lot of pros. Having our own living room and kitchen was a big plus from a food savings standpoint as opposed to staying in a regular hotel room. The only disadvantage was catching a shuttle (even though they ran at regular 5-10 minute intervals). The walk to Coral Towers was not too bad if you didn't want to wait on the shuttle, around 6-7 minutes. The room we had (2 bedroom lockout) were pretty much representative as the website, very spacious and clean. Our view from the balcony was not too good (our building was #3, #7 and #1 would probably be the most convenient with the best views). We used the workout room every day and it was sufficient. The equipment was well maintained and clean, better than most hotel chains with workout rooms. The pool at Harborside was really nice and not too crowded most days. If your arrival and departure are on Saturdays as ours was, be prepared for a very busy lobby and front desk. The front desk people will tell you that housekeeping can't keep up with all the change overs for that day so expect some delays. We did get to check-in early around noon on the larger side of our unit but they didn't finish the smaller side bedroom until around 8:30 that night. Have your taxi driver stop by a grocery store on the way from the airport and this will save you a trip and money to go out later to a grocery store. Harborside does offer a grocery run in the shuttle for $7.00 and that is reasonable, but we really liked having our gocery shopping over with so we could unpack everything at once. Small things we needed during the week were purchased at a small grocery across the street from Harborside. The only thing we were disappointed in was The Point Restaurant at Harborside. The views are great over the water but the food was well below par compared to everywhere else we ate and the service was awful. Atlantis as a whole never disappoints us. The water slides, pools and overall experience are unlike any place we've been. Expensive yes, but if you stay at Harborside it lessens the overall cost.

I visited the bahamas on about 4 different occasions and I have found that my stay at the Harbourside Resort was the best. Atlantis is very expensive to purchase food from the restaurants every night so been able to cook your own meal was a def plus. The rooms are outrageously big and the service is like none other. While you are staying at Harbourside you still get all the amenties and more from Atlantis.

Sat, Jun 8, 2013 Camden, New York

My husband & I met up with my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter the week of April 28th thru May 3rd, 2013, as we live in different states-NY & MA. We stayed in different rooms, 2 floors apart in the Royal Towers. The ride on the shuttle was no problem, contrary to what I had read in other reviews here. They made sure we got with the others going there, filled out a card to tell us what date and time they would be picking us up when we needed to return to the airport. We arrived at the resort and was immediately impressed with the lush grounds and statues surrounding the hotel. The lobby at the Royal Towers was breath taking, which held wall after wall of aquariums with such a variety of fish and sea life, we could have spent an hour just enjoying that. In fact, we went back to that several times for my grand daughter to enjoy and so we could take more photos of the sharks and stingrays. The rooms were spacious and comfortable as well as the 2 king size beds. Our balcony and view overlooked a bay and every day we would look to see how many cruise ships had docked at the port. It was a beautiful view. My son & his wife upgraded to an ocean view room for $100.00, but although it was beautiful, I didn't feel as though I missed out by not doing the same. We all signed up for the meal plan or all inclusive, which is an absolute must if you are staying longer than the "day visit" as some people who are coming ashore from the cruise ships. The meal plan gives you dinner the night you arrive and breakfast and dinner each night there after and then breakfast before you leave. Lunches had to be bought. There were 11 restaurants to choose from using the plan, but there was another 11 for day trip visitors and/or lunch to buy for those on the meal plan. Most of those were franchises like Starbucks, Johnny Rockets etc. The restaurants using the plan had a great variety from fine dining to casual to buffets. If you chose a fine dining, the set up was a little strange. As there were 4 adults, we had 4 individual meals that included 1 appetizer, 1 entree and 1 side and 1 dessert. But before you were even given the menu, each waiter strongly advised only ordering 2 entrees for the 4 of us and 2 sides as the size of the entree would easily feed 3-5 people. And they were not kidding! We were served these huge platters, family style of what we ordered and could not do any of them justice to finish. So, we agreed we would order 2 entrees and 2 appetizers so as not to waste food. One night when my husband and I ordered a salad for our appetizer, it was a huge mountain of salad, but with the other appetizers the others ordered, we never even got to touch the salad at all! We could not figure out how this method was to their advantage or what the reasoning was. My daughter-in-law mentioned that although ordering 2 and 2 seemed less wasteful, it was a little difficult to find or agree on 2 entrees that 4 people would like or agree upon. Why not just serve less of each entree and then we could all choose something different if we chose to. We couldn't take food back to the rooms as there were no refrigerators or microwaves other than a small fridge loaded with cans of drinks & water, which had to be purchased separately on your room charge. The food was great though, we had no complaints about anything we ate. The alcoholic drinks were extra and anything other than what I previously mentioned was also put on your room charge. The average bill for our dinners, just two of us was between $178-$245. But we only actually paid for any alcoholic drinks, again on our room charge. So, you can see if you are not on the meal plan, or just come for the day, you should plan to eat at one of the franchise restaurants available, which weren't cheap, but better than one of the fancier restaurants. Now, as to the resort itself...it was utterly amazing!! It was so gorgeously landscaped and maintained, you truly felt you were in Paradise. The endless pools and ponds of sea life, stingrays, turtles, sharks, etc were right there to watch and enjoy up close. The slower lazy river ride was great fun, but not nearly as long going around once as I thought. But you could go around and around as long as you liked, no one would stop you or make you get back in a line. There were no lines when we went. There was a little difficulty in getting into the tubes, but I think that had more to do with our ages, than the tubes. One word of caution-when riding along, it's a good idea to pull your feet up as you near a concrete wall as you can get quite a scrape on your leg or foot. My husband actually overturned his tube and hit his head on the concrete "flooring" and had quite a scrape on his head, which bled pretty good. He looked like he had been attacked by some sea serpent. (Just kidding). He also had quite a few scrapes on his knees from the faster rapid river ride. I didn't go on that. There were 11 different pools, some for each hotel area, each decorated and gorgeous. There was a kiddy pool that had a "play gym" to climb with a slanted rock wall, ropes, etc and a huge 5 ft tall bucket that kept filling with water and when it filled up, it tipped over and got all the kids and adults under it who were playing there at the time all wet. The kids loved it, squealing with delight. We walked around the resort and down to the beach where the ocean was and it was just beautiful as caribbean water always is. It's the gorgeous aqua and royal blue as you see in photos, and it is just like that, the photos aren't altered. We walked over to the other smaller adjoining towers or hotels and each was decorated with class, style and different from the others. The Royal Tower was the best, but the others, although smaller were beautiful in their own way. If you want to save money and still have an awesome experience, I would recommend the Coral or Beach Towers. By the way, don't be afraid to bring along the teenagers who you feel might be bored. Besides all the water rides, there is a great teenagers "club" called "Crush" where the teenagers can play video games, use the internet, and have a real club where they can dance and drink non-alcoholic beverages at night. They also have the casino with video game machines and regular gambling tables. Honestly, I don't think they have too many winners playing the slots. I never heard anyone "winning" or bells or lights going off around them, but there did seem to be some serious winners at the tables. It was fun playing the slots though. If you sign up for the Dolphin Experience, be prepared to pay big bucks. It is $130.00 EACH including a child's admission. No discount for children. We opted not to do that, although my son, his wife and my grand daughter who is only 22 months did go. They spent another $140.00 to have someone take photos of them during the experience. It was about 90 minutes which included the quick instructions on what to do and not to do. My husband and I didn't go because the whole idea was so my grand daughter could see and touch the dolphins and at her age I was afraid she would freak or be too scared and just want to leave, which meant that the 5 of us would have spent a total of $660.00 just to turn around and walk away because my grand daughter was too afraid to enjoy the experience. I didn't think it was worth that much and too much of a gamble. When my grand daughter doesn't want to do something, she won't do it, just like all kids her age today. Actually, she loved it and even kissed the dolphin!! So, what do I know? All in all, we loved the whole trip, never had a complaint. Going in April was a great time of year to go. The weather was great, it wasn't hot or humid, except maybe one day when it rained for about an hour and we ate at an outdoor restaurant which had a huge covering, and the staff made sure they didn't sit anyone near the perimeter tables, so no one got wet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My husband stated that it was the best trip we have ever been on, but as all of our trips have been different and unique, such as Ireland, Aruba, Disney World, Toronto, St. Maarten, Anguilla, Las Vegas and Maui, I couldn't compare or say that. But I would highly recommend going to Atlantis. Oh, we also took the taxi downtown ($11 each, but if you waited for another couple to go at the same time, it was $4 each, which we did) to the Straw Marketplace which was an experience all of it's own. There is a huge building that is right along side the dock where the cruise ships dock for the day, kind of like a open warehouse. There are probably hundreds of vendors selling souvenirs made of straw, hats, purses, fans, toys etc, along with the usual t-shirts, hats, inexpensive jewelry, beach towels. I did buy a few things as did my husband. I felt bad for these employees who sit there all day and not only sell the items, but have to sit there and make the straw items in their "free time". I'm assuming they are not independent owners of the little vending booths, just employees. I could be wrong. Anyway, it is a great place to take a family on a get-away vacation! I would definitely go again.

"Loved Our Stay"

We've been to the Atlantis Harborside twice, and will definitely return. The 2 bedroom lockoff is so large, we brought friends who stayed in the lockoff portion of the villa. Even the 1-bedroom Premium is large enough for a family. Atlantis is easy to get to using the free hotel bus, and one arrives every couple of minutes. We loved almost everything about our stay and will definitely return. We went to Atlantis most days, which was free, and did the Bahamas Snorkel Ocean Do-it-all package that included parasail, banana boat, lunch and snorkeling off Rose Island. Dinner at night was often expensive, however, we spent a few nights at the pool bar restaurant, and at the Atlas Bar & Grille. We absolutely loved the all-you-can eat buffet at Marketplace, and the dinner at Carmines. Expensive, but worth it. We only had one problem, within minutes of arriving at Atlantis on our very first trip, my 6 year old son ducked out of the tunnel and was lost for one hour. The staff helped tremendously to locate him, however, keep track of children since Atlantis is very large -try to have a meeting location picked out in case anyone gets lost. Definitely one of our best vacation spots!

"Good experience"

We have stayed at Harborside 4 times. We bought a property about 10 years ago. We have gone twice with our children. A clear advantage of staying here over the hotel is of course the full scale kitchen. We fly delta and check in a cooler with ice packs full of food and stop at the local grocer on the way there for additional items. If you do this, you potentially can avoid the restaurants. In fact, the first year we brought the kids we avoided the restaurants altogether as all they want is kid food anyway and barely incurred any room charges. Despite many comments in regard to Atlantis showing its age, I would agree with this, however in my opinion, there are really no other vacation spots like this. I am looking forward to returning for many years to come with my family as the familiarity increases with each trip. I am glad I will be able to pass this investment on to my children one day for them to hopefully experience with their own families.
