"Grand Traverse Resort still a gem"

5.0/5

Mon, May 20, 2013 Bloomfield Hills, MI

It seems like I get back here every year when I'm up in Traverse City for an annual Senior Hockey Tournament and/or golf @ the many great Northern Michigan courses. Of course, now that TC is a recognized "foodie" destination, there's even more reason to head up North. So my wife and I stayed in the Tower @ GTR and had a 15th floor bay view room. Well the view can't be beat and the staff can't be nicer. The rooms are well appointed and spacious. Wireless internet is included. Their is a small fridge in the room, but no microwave. They've got a very nice restaurant @ the top of the building, called Aerie, but we ended up @ a couple of downtown restaurants to try out different things. No reason in my book not to stay @ GTR, especially if you want the views from the room and/or the golf on premises (3 courses).

"Not impressed"

We stayed here 2 nights. For the price and from past reviews we expected more. The hotel was loud and the pool area was very dirty. The hotels location isn't that close to anything in Traverse City. Both nights were were there the bar area located at the base of the elevators was very loud and obnoxious. Our room was nice, clean, and had a nice view. But on our next visit we will try another location.

"A real "vacation location""

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is outside of Traverse City, and there is no need to leave the Resort, if you don't want to. Lovely rooms, good food, golf and spa amenities are available. It's a great spot for professional meetings, as well. The meeting rooms are very nice and soundproof, and the catered meals are healthy with a good selection of food choices.

"Girls' Night Out"

Although this was only a Friday night stay, it was a very "grand" mini vacation for us. 3 of my friends & I stayed here on a Friday night. We booked two rooms that were adjoining. We were able to stay in the Tower, but that didn't seem to be that big of a deal to us. Perhaps it was because we stayed on the 3rd floor and overlooked the roof....but we did have a nice view of the bay. I'm not complaining - being on the 3rd floor meant that we were able to get on/off the elevator without too much of a wait. The only downside to this hotel is that it is not closer to town and the mall. But there is enough to do on the property. Between the shopping and spa, not to mention the complimentary casino shuttle...you'll find plenty to do! I know we sure did.

"Might be good for leisure travelers, but doesn't make the grade for business"

Sun, Apr 28, 2013 Framingham, Massachusetts

I stayed two nights at the Grand Traverse for a business meeting and found it OK but not memorable. The shuttle service from the airport was excellent, a real bargain as an included feature in the $14.95 daily facilities fee. The lobby is beautiful and the adjacent shops provide a nice array of clothing and specialty foods, though at somewhat inflated prices. The staff was cheerful and check-in was speedy. My problems were with the room itself. The ventilation system was so noisy that it woke me up a couple of times during my first night there. It also didn't ventilate very well. Room temperature varied mostly between stuffy warm and uncomfortably cool. Temps were in the 50s during my stay, which is a level that frustrates many HVAC systems. Wi-fi was clumsy to use and variable in performance. Logons appeared to expire after a few hours, which forced me to re-authenticate several times. On my second day there the authentication wall failed entirely, which forced me to call technical support and wait 15 minutes while a workaround was put in place. Even then, performance varied between fast and abysmal with no apparent pattern. Since wi-fi is essential to today's business traveler, I found this performance unacceptable. The resort's golf course looked very nice. I wish I had had a chance to play it. For a leisure trip, the Grand Traverse might be a bargain. My room was only about $120/night on the group rate, including the facilities fee. That's certainly a good rate for the vacation traveler. I just found the services a bit lacking for a business trip.
