"A gem in a really small town"

We stayed here when we came to a Truman State open house for perspective students. We loved our room and actually enjoyed hearing the train whistles as the trains pulled into the Amtrak station. You can even turn the TV to the live cable feed from the station to watch the trains pull in. (Ok, it's a little tacky but that's exactly what we expect from a small town like La Plata.) The breakfast was good, nothing special, but just what we needed before heading out for a day of university exploration. If it weren't for the quilting ladies who took out their frustrations with one star reviews, the Depot Inn would have an overall "very good" rating. I guess you can't please everyone, but as for us, we were pleased with our stay and will be back if junior decides on Truman State.

1st time here & we have been here for 3 nights & brought our grandson (who we have taken on train vacations for the past 8 years, since he was 4). This is a wonderful, relaxing place and great for anyone who loves trains! Every employee we came in contact with went out of their way to be helpful and made us feel welcome. Our grandson enjoyed the pool when we weren't out in the cabin watching the trains. They provide a golf cart for you to drive to the cabin, as it is not very far and it is also heated in the winter or you can drive your car Also, they have a live webcam on one of the TV channels where you can watch the trains from the comfort of your room. The rooms and hotel were very clean! We loved the large lobby area where my grandson & his pa pa played pool, while my mother in law & I relaxed in the comfy chairs reading and crocheting. The decor is trains, but very tasteful! Yes, lots of trains go by, but they did not disturb our sleep as they are not right next to the hotel. The only drawback we found is you really need to drive to Kirksville (around 10-12 miles) to find someplace to eat, but other than that, we will be back!

Just returned from an overnight stay at Depot Inn. We have been staying at this wonderful, train themed motel since it opened in 2006 when we go visit the relatives that I have left in La Plata and when I/we pay respects to my many ancestors who are buried in this small town. Depot Inn is a model for other motels - whether in a small town or big city. It is so clean, so well kept and it never fails to be a great experience. The friendliness of a small town when you come in at Depot Inn to register, combined with the beautiful decor, sets this place apart from all others. The comfort of the beds is top notch and they have upgraded the tv's to the thin flat screens now. I wish everywhere we stayed was this clean, comfortable and new looking. The owners take special interest in keeping this place up. My dad (who would have turned 100 this year) would have been so proud to see this motel in the town where he was born and grew up. Unfortunately, he passed away before it was built. Each time we stay there I wish my dad could have seen it just one time. My ancestors who lived their lives in La Plata and area would be so proud to see something like this built in their little town. Depot Inn is certainly a jewel for La Plata. Perfect for train enthusiasts or not.... it's a motel and a train museum all wrapped up into one. Even the pool area has train memorabilia! The train depot is close and Depot Inn has an open air "train" to take you over to the overlook to watch the trains. I LOVE this place and look forward to staying there. So much fun no matter how many times you've been. Location is tops - visible from Hwy 63, easy access. Restaurant within walking distance that is open long hours. If you'd rather go for a drive to get something to eat, Kirksville is a short 14 mile drive up the road. When in La Plata, be sure to drive over to N. Owensby Street and see the Gilbreath-McLorn home and Doneghy home - both on the National Registry.

We stayed at the Depot Inn and Suites in La Plata, MO. This is such a great place to go to get away for a weekend with the kids or as a couple. The halls of the Inn have cases built in with tons of railroad history. The lobby is a welcome place to hang out and there's an adorable train-themed playground-that might need some boards replaced for safety. Our suite had a in-suite jacuuzi the boys (and parents alike) enjoyed. It was very spacious and clean with plenty of room for all of us to sleep and hang out. Its just outside of Kirksville-very close to Thousand Hills State Park and its beautiful lake and petroglyphs and other fun outdoor places to explore. The hotel was spacious, spottless, the breakfast was generous and my boys absolutly loved the pool. The only problem we had with the place is they rent out the pool for birthday parties. It happened to be a very rowdy group of 8 and 9 year old boys who made a ton of noise we could hear in our room where are 2 year old was trying to nap....and was awkward for my 8 yr old to swim with them and I felt awkward in front of all those parents for the party who were not in swim wear....The hotel also has a detached event center and some passenger rail cars with a museum inside on site. There were reserved channels on the tv for passing trains so we could watch the comings and goings nearby and try to get out to the rails to catch a train for viewing. Kids of all ages would love a stay here! Oh, and they have a local free shuttle.

The depot inn was fantastic. I stayed there for 2 weeks and loved it. It didn't feel like a hotel at all. The place was very clean. I was working nights and got back to the hotel at 4:30 a.m. To find the lobby doors locked. The manager then gave me a key to get in late at night. The hotel is locked up from 11 pm to 5 am. Breakfast was good. Had a great stay.
