"Fabulous site, pity about the rough edges"

3.0/5

Thu, May 16, 2013 Auckland

Stayed here for 2 nights. Amazing location right next to Waitangi Centennial grounds, and with an awesome view out to the sea. It really makes you appreciate how beautiful the Bay of Islands is. However ... once you get past the landscape and look around the hotel it is run down on the edges. Everything looks as though it needs another paint. The restaurant had lovely staff but was very dated. The rooms were on the grubby side. During our stay the same dirty flannel remained behind the bathroom door. The paint was flaking. There were hand marks all over the mirror. Overall, they need to sink some dinero into the place in ordet to bring it up to speed with other hotels available there. Also, in this day and age, they really need to have BROADBAND available in all rooms for FREE, not just for 20 minutes in the bar. This will be a clincher for next time. I'd be interested to see what their response would be.

"Quiet stay with nice view"

4.0/5

Wed, May 15, 2013 Denver, Colorado

Our stay was very quiet and pleasant. The rooms were clean-- pretty typical aside from the great views of the bay. Rooms included a mini fridge w/ bar, flat screen, a/c, room safe, tub w/ shower, and balcony. The location was perfect for us as we were only a short drive away from the shops and cafes in Paihia and we found the staff to be courteous and enormously helpful in recommending attractions and restaurants. Can’t speak to the food, as we ate at local cafes and restaurants during our stay. Be sure to make use of the outdoor spa area on the resort grounds. These were very nice outdoor heated and unheated pools in a natural setting overlooking the bay. Also, from what we have heard-- the place is quite a bit busier in their high season (we were there off-season), so if you would like to experience that, recommend the summer months. Otherwise, if you like the quieter atmosphere, shoot for autumn or spring as the weather is still quite temperate. While the area is a bit too touristy for our liking, we would definitely stay here again for a relaxing stay in a beautiful area. Cheers!

"Great getaway from Auckland City"

4.0/5

Tue, May 14, 2013 Auckland Region, New Zealand

$199 for 2 nights for 2 people in a Superior Seaview Room incl full buffet cooked breakfast both days at Copthorne Hotel & Resort Bay Of Islands, worth $480 - voucher deal via dailydo.co.nz This was a great deal, and one we will continue to buy to get some nice, easy to access via road respite from Auckland City. The hotel opened in 1963 originally as the Waitangi Hotel. Being 50 years old now it does feel a little dated but that is easily overcome. We stayed in one of the "100" numbered rooms which have a spectacular sea view. The hallway carpets were quite badly stained and need chemical treatment. Thankfully the room carpets were cleaner. The rooms are small but functional. They have a nice 40" wide LCD TV which is good for bed viewing although their Sky codec does not use the correct 16:9 ratio for widescreen pictures so the words, scores and information banners disappear off-screen - please fix that! We tried on our own set, but couldn't, so the problem must be the main codec unit. We arrived at night, and found it very difficult to see where the reception was, carpark lighting and directional building signage was almost non-existent which was frustrating after a 3-4 hour drive, after a working day. We entered the room to hear a most ghastly animal screeching sound coming from outside the verandah door. Being so dark outside made it hard to see what it was. The sound continued for about 30 seconds at a time, then stopped for about 5 minutes then started again. I've never heard that sound before so given it was the balmy north and we were so close to water I assumed it was frogs or toads. We discovered the next day wild rabbits that seem to live under the verandah steps of several rooms in the 100 series...happily hopping about in the afternoons on the grass before darting underneath the verandahs...and the sounds started again. This was very cute and quaint and it felt right!! But boy those rabbits are noisy, LOL The 100 series rooms have old-style wooden concertina doors that block off the sea-view verandah (with no curtains) from the bedroom. They're very squeaky and very loud in the mornings when you're wanting to see the rising sun. They underscore the dated feeling. The king sized bed was comfy. Good too that they had 2 extra pillows available, which were both used and appreciated. The bathroom is small in size, the bath is shallow, the shower head old but great pressure, the lights brilliantly bright, the mirror nice and big (including watching your male-self using the loo!), the door had a few paint scrapes and the grouting had small patches of discolouration. Great towels too: ribbed and non-ribbed. I preferred ribbed. The walls were thinner than we expected so we could hear muffled voices in rooms on both sides, and more clearly the TV that would have been against the bedroom wall. This wasn't a problem but the place is so quiet that any unwanted noise stands out. The place has stunning grounds that back right up against the Treaty Grounds. Although signs say entry fee is $25, apparently it is free for NZers although I don't know how you'd claim that wihtout a passport. But it was nice to know about. The restaurant breakky team led by the effervescent Toni was fabulous. The made bespoke plates of cooked brekky on the quiet day, but had a full buffet cooked brekky oin the weekend. 6 choices of juice, 4 of cereal, all the usual hot stuff plus pancakes. Dining there was great value. Toni was a pleasure to meet every morning. Coffee from machine was drinkable. The quiet and silence at nice (once th rabbits had settled donw) was so encompassing and enveloping that it was actually LOUD. You cannot buy this sort of tranquility, let alone for the great deal we purchased. This is definitely a place for quiet, peaceful, unhurried relaxing. It really suits the Bay of Islands. All in all, we've found a great getaway place within driving distance of Auckland and will be returning again and again in the future. Thanks team Copthorne

"We shall return"

5.0/5

Fri, May 10, 2013 Auckland Region, New Zealand

We need to travel to the Bay of Islands regularly and usually stay in one of the many motels. This time we took friends with us and decided on the option of the Copthorne ... good decision!! While this may be an older hotel it surpasses many we have used in the U.S. and Europe. Rooms were big enough for us, they were very clean and well serviced. Meals were sufficient and all we required. The outstanding aspect was the convivial and helpful staff, their attitude proved our accommodation to be the correct selection and on that basis alone we shall stay there on our future trips.
