"Needs update ASAP"

This hotel is very nice looking from the lobby but the rooms are in terrible need of a remodel. Average service. The hotel is in the process of a renovation, but we were on the second floor and the rooms were clearly not updated. The photos look great, so the hotel might be very nice when completed. The view from our room was of a dirty parking lot and the noise level was very high. Ducks were in the swimming pool. Overall, it was a place to sleep and nothing more.

I write this review as things stood when we visited but the hotel is undergoing refurbishment so some things will be better soon. The room was clean and comfy with air con and the view was lovely (Coconut Island). There was no fridge in the room which was a major negative point but I emailed Castle Resorts who have assured me that all rooms will have them after work is finished, There is a lovely cafe for a light breakfast if you don't want the full buffet. Cafe is also great for sandwich lunch or afternoon tea and pastries. The lift was not working for a short while, the TV needed re-tuning and the ice machine(one on every alternate floor) produced no ice but all three problems were speedily resolved following our phone call to maintenance. There is free WiFi in the lobby. It is worth a walk on Banyan Drive at dusk just to hear the frogs and roosting Mynas in the fabulous Banyan trees. There is a store nearby for snacks etc.

"Don't go Yet"

To be fair, they are renovating the hotel. I would wait until the renovation is done. This hotel has the most beautiful location in Hilo. The views of the bay are breathtaking. The hotel however is very run down. The view from our lanai almost made up for it, but not quite. The staff was very nice and breakfast was good but I can't recommend this hotel at this time.

NOT GREAT... I spent a night at the Castle Hilo Hawaiian hotel to visit the volcano - I am not a 'fussy' person with regards to hotel rooms - but I did not like this hotel - the room was scruffy with wallpaper coming away from the walls in the corner - the outdoor furniture on the deck was rusty and not attractive. The room was the usual size and the bathroom was the normal size. The bed was reasonably comfortable - but the room just had a neglected, scruffy feel about it , and a musty smell when you walked into the room. the reception area was a large area with very little area in it. After we checked in we decided to get a drink and take it to the pool - as soon as you walked into the hall way you could smell the musty smell again. We went into the bar area - which again had a very musty smell and was pretty much deserted - it took a while to get a drink (goodness knows why??) and we took them to the pool to sit down and have a drink. the pool area was average - just a square pool with a few chairs around it - the pool was of average standard but some people did comment that it didnt look that clean. We decided to have dinner in the restaurant - mainly because we couldnt be bothered walking down the road !.....and that was pretty average as well - and I thought it was quite expensive for what it was. the dining room was huge but had no atmosphere and the meal was not that great.I had steak - but I am sure it was a cheap cut of meat - very thin and a bit on the tough side! it would appear that the hotel must have been a very nice hotel when it was built but it looks like there has been no money spent on it for several years - I was trying to fax some papers to new zealand and they did not have a scanner - just an old fax machine. There wasnt really anything near the hotel - other than another 2 star hotel - maybe Hilo needs a general lift as a town! I probably would not bother going to Hilo again - but would certainly visit Kona - which is a much more vibrant town.

The reason is if you wish to take a fabulous drive around the Big Island, your best bet is to do it this way. Starting out from Kailua-Kona take I90 through Parker Ranch. Stop off there at L&L BBQ for a fun lunch. Go into Parker Ranch Store for free samples of "jerky". Proceed to Highway 19. You'll see the ocean on your left in a short while. Then, you'll need to stop off somewhere along the way to rest and refresh and that's where the Hilo Hawaiian comes into play. The hotel is well equipped to handle overnight guests. Clean and friendly with a nice restaurant. The bedding is fresh and the rooms well kept. The bay has great views of Mauna Kea with its snow-capped summit. Because this is a vintage hotel, don't look for a bright shiny sterile-new property, but more a homey, warm and very well situated property. Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls and the approach to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is on your doorstep. Each of the banyan trees out front has been named after some famous character or sports figure and is written on a tag at the base of the tree. The hotel is framed by fabulous shrubbery and an oriental garden for walking for visiting. You'll love it like we did!
