The second-largest metropolis in the county in terms of area, Houston is home to thriving oil and gas as well as aerospace and medical industries. Downtown Houston features many upscale hotels that fill with business travelers during the week. This is a good area to seek out Houston cheap hotels, many of which offer deals on weekends. The Museum District, just south of downtown, is a leafy, tree-lined area home to Rice University, the Houston Zoo, and several museums. Vacationers can enjoy walking though the district’s Hermann Park and dining at the area’s excellent restaurants.
Some international visitors fly into Houston simply to shop at the 320-plus stores of the Houston Galleria. The Galleria area is home to both upscale and mid-range hotels, some of which are actually attached to the mall. Artsy Montrose, with its funky galleries, coffee shops, and ethnic restaurants is a favorite with the Bohemian set. Those with budding astronauts in tow may want to stay at a Houston hotel located near the NASA Space Center, about 25 miles southeast of downtown.
