An exotic island getaway, Flores is the capital city of the Peten region of Guatemala. Greater Flores’ town proper and most historic area is located on an island called Lago Petén Itzá. Most Flores hotels are located on the island and many of them are very affordable.
There also are Flores hotels in Santa Elena and San Benito, which are the twin towns that lie on either side of the island. They, along with Lago Petén Itzá make up Greater Flores. Other Flores hotels can be found in the Livingston area. With wonderful coastal views and long stretches of beach, Flores is popular with travelers to Guatemala.
No visit to a Flores hotel is complete without a trip to Tikal, the most famous Mayan ruin in Guatemala, located about 60 km from Flores. There's also plenty to do within Flores proper. You can rent a kayak or canoe and explore the local waterways or get underground in the Ak'tun Kan, "the cave of the serpent." A simple stroll through the cobblestone streets and alleyways amid Flores's colonial red-roofed buildings and the Spanish plaza is also an excellent way to spend an afternoon.
