A Blend of Influences
River boats meet high-rise Ho Chi Minh City hotels and pagodas in Vietnam's largest city, which was formerly known as Saigon. While its bustling street markets, water puppet shows, and steaming bowls of pho bear the distinct hallmarks of Southeast Asia, the city's wide boulevards and colonial buildings bespeak a French influence that shows particulary in its wide boulevards and buildings like the old post office. All over the city, the tropical climate bolsters the botanical gardens and many markets are open to the outside air.
Finding the Right Hotel for Your Budget
The city is divided into districts and there are many hotels in Ho Chi Minh City's districts 1 and 3 that are near shops, restaurants, bars, and museums. Many of the higher-end hotels are near Ben Thanh market and you'll be able to find historic and luxury hotels near the Opera House. If you're looking for cheap Ho Chi Minh City hotels, however, your best bet is to join the backpackers in Pham Ngu Lao. Another option is district 5, which has a large Chinese influence.
While exploring the city, be sure to visit the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, and one of the city's many markets, where bargaining for the best price is expected and encouraged. Drink the local coffee while strolling the promenade overlooking the river, and, if you're feeling adventurous, you can visit the underground tunnels nearby.
