Gateway to Costa Rica
San Jose, the main tourist and business gateway to Costa Rica, is a thriving city of 1.4 million people ringed by lush green hills. Whether you come for Costa Rica surf, rivers, jungles, or volcanoes, you are likely to spend a day or two in San Jose. If you plan on using the city as a base for exploration or just want to spend the night in town before catching a flight home, there is a San Jose hotel that’s right for you.
San Jose Neighborhoods
Most of the city’s museums and historical buildings are located in downtown, an area known as the Centro. Highlights here include the lively Plaza de la Cultura, the ornate National Theater, and the pre-Colombian treasure-laden Gold Museum. The Centro is bustling and crowded, but also a good spot to find San Jose cheap hotels.
The leafy suburban neighborhoods of Escazu and Santa Ana feature Spanish-style homes and shopping centers intermingled with business high-rises and a variety of comfortable San Jose hotels. From here you can tour downtown, which is only 15 minutes away, but also take day trips to explore Costa Rica’s lush Central Valley via zip-lining, canopy tours, rafting, and volcano hikes. If you are simply flying into or out of San Jose and won’t be spending time in the city, there are also a number of convenient hotels located near the airport.
