Everything seems larger than life in New York, including its air travel system. With so many people flying in and out of the Big Apple each day for business and pleasure, a single airport isn’t sufficient. Instead, there are three principal gateways for New York flights, operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) was renamed from Idlewild in 1963 to honor the 35th president and is the busiest international air gateway in the United States. It hosts seven terminals, has nine miles of runway, and is served by no fewer than 80 airlines. Located about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, the airport has abundant connections by taxi, limo, and public transit to provide convenient travel to New York hotels.

LaGuardia (LGA), named for spirited Depression-era New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, is located in Queens, about eight miles from Midtown. The airport has four main terminals and 72 gates to manage flights to and from New York. There is also convenient ground transportation to the surrounding regions.

Perhaps your best bet for cheap flights to New York, however, is Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Opened in 1928, it is the oldest commercial airfield in the United States. Amelia Earhart helped formally dedicate it in 1935, just two years before her disappearance. With approximately 40 major airlines serving the airport, a flight here is the perfect addition to New York vacation packages.
