Like many early American industrial cities, Cleveland is located where a great river meets a great lake--in this case, the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie. Overused by the industries that originally made Cleveland a great city, the waterfront areas now continue to evolve into beautiful public spaces since extensive cleanup and restoration began in the 1970s.
Just as the city's appearance has undergone a transformation, its industry-focused attitude has evolved into a burgeoning hub for arts and culture. The city may not have invented rock and roll but its disc jockey Alan Freed popularized the term in the early 1950s and today, Cleveland vacation packages absolutely must include visits to the famous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The Cleveland Museum of Art, a show at the House of Blues, and a game at "The Jake" are also must-dos.
In recent years Cleveland has labored to convert many of its old warehouses and factories into restaurants and clubs. The effort has paid off with a blossoming culinary scene and a charming blend of new and old.
