Should You Be Worried About Being Pickpocketed on a Plane?
What with terrorist plots and emergency landings, you’ve already got enough to worry about when flying these days. The chances of something happening are slim, obviously, and most of us just shrug it off, get on the plane, and open up a magazine or take a little nap to get through the flight.
But now we’ve got to be worried about sleeping on airplanes too?
Apparently so. Police are currently investigating a claim that five people on a recent Air France flight were robbed while they slept. The passengers were seated in Business Class, and the alert was raised when one woman opened her purse after waking and discovered that all the cash had gone. Well, maybe she just spent it all at Duty Free and forgot about it, you’re thinking. But no, four other passengers reported missing cash as well, the grand total ending up around $6,262.
Truth be told, I’ve always worried a little bit about this. Think about it: there’s probably no other situation in life where you’d get up to go to the bathroom and leave your iPod, your wallet, and your laptop just sitting in your bag (or in your seat pocket!) three inches away from a whole mess of strangers. We just assume our personal effects will be safe on a flight because….well, we just do. It would be absurd for them not to be! Apparently, though, that isn’t always the case.
What do you think? Do you ever worry about being pickpocketed on a plane? Are you likely to do anything differently after reading about this?
