Ready for Takeoff: Awesome Alternatives to Your Usual Airport
Trying to find a great price for your next flight? Try using an alternate airport to your usual first choice. By searching more than one airport, you’ll have more flights, and possibly also airlines, to choose from, which often translates into cheaper seat options. And who knows, you may also find a great new airport to call your own.
Looking for flights to Miami? Try Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach airports.
You don’t have to rely on Miami International (MIA) to get to the southern reaches of the Sunshine State. Instead, try one of these two options: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL), just 32 miles north of MIA, where the small size usually translates into limited waits in security lines. And small but efficient Palm Beach International (PBI) – 60 miles north of MIA, but worth the drive — where transit time from curb to gate is often less than 5 minutes. Even better? PBI has free WiFi and an indoor putting green.
How about cheap flights to Los Angeles for spring break? Try John Wayne or Ontario airports.
Don’t panic, you don’t have to navigate LAX (Los Angeles Airport) if you’re traveling in Los Angeles. There are actually several great options for getting around the LA area, including John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, about 45 miles southeast of LAX, and Ontario Airport (ONT), just 35 miles east of LAX, and both worlds away in temperament. Not only can you easily drive, drop off, and even park at these more human-sized aviation depots, but they’re also more convenient entryways for attractions such as Anaheim and Disneyland.
When searching for New York travel packages try Newark International Airport.
Only a 15 minute train ride from Manhattan, and amazingly just 30 miles from JFK (John F. Kennedy), if you include Newark International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey in your airline search for New York City, you’ll give yourself nearly double the number of flights to choose from. The shopping and dining here are a pleasant surprise as well: there are outposts of NYC favorites such as Grand Central Oyster Bar, Crumbs Bake Shop, and Gallagher’s Steak House to help pass the time. Locals also sing the praises of little known Westchester County Airport, a savvy option for short-distance domestic flights, especially to destinations in Florida. Located on the border of Westchester, NY, and Greenwich, Ct, it’s just 33 miles from midtown Manhattan, and a relatively quick commute into New York.
And if you are planning a Washington DC vacation try Ronald Reagan National or Baltimore Washington International airports.
When most folks head to the nation’s Capitol, they often look at flights into Washington DC Dulles Airport (IAD), which is in Virginia, and often very crowded. However, Reagan National is just three miles (!) from downtown DC, and a can be a better choice for a weekend jaunt. And don’t forget Baltimore’s BWI, which has easy access to DC (and Baltimore, too) by Amtrak, and is actually the same distance (30 miles) from the Capitol as Dulles.
