Mancation Series: An Offbeat Man Guide to Las Vegas

Editor’s Note: With March Madness, Spring Training and music festivals in high gear, spring may just be the manliest season of the year. Please join us in welcoming IgoUgo lead editor and man’s man Alex Basek as we salute man stuff for The Window Seat’s Mancation Series.

As a dude, I’ve been asked to comment on mancations (non-Charlie Sheen related edition). What’s a mancation? Ultimately, it comes down to activities that appeal to male sensibilities. That’s why I recommend Las Vegas as the ultimate mancation destination, not least of all because Vegas has something that appeals to just about everyone of any gender.

To kick off any proper mancation, I suggest the Downtown Cocktail Room, which keeps those Rat Pack sensibilities with the frisson of seediness that comes from venturing to Fremont Street. The lounge itself is swanky and modern, and many of the bartenders at the Strip’s best hotel bars come learn their craft here before spreading the cocktail gospel elsewhere.

After that, I highly recommend a spin through the Tom Ford store in the Crystals Mall. What? High fashion and malls aren’t manly? I beg to differ. This particular store happens to stock some of the fanciest smoking jackets I’ve ever seen. If they’re good enough for Hef, they’re definitely good enough for your mancation.

Then, once you’ve got your cocktails and your smoking jacket situation settled, wrap up your trip (the next morning, naturally) with a drive out to the Valley of Fire –you can even snag a rental car from the basement of the Cosmopolitan Hotel for easy access. These cool sandstone formations in the Mojave Desert will allow you to channel your inner Bono. Maybe bring a leather vest and practice singing to complete the effect.
