Ask a Turks & Caicos Expert: Meet Sara Fried, Travelocity’s Turks & Caicos Market Manager

Editor’s Note: Periodically, we’ll be featuring a Q&A with our resident destination experts at Travelocity, the Travelocity market managers. Market managers are locals to their destination and experts on everything and anything related to tourism in their markets. Please welcome them to The Window Seat.

Sara Fried is the Travelocity market manager for Turks & Caicos. She has been with Travelocity for seven years and is currently based in Boston, MA. She enjoys sailing, snorkeling, great food and spending time with good friends (especially on the beach). Her favorite part of the job is exploring her destinations and all of the great discounts on hotels! Now that JetBlue is flying nonstop from Boston – Providenciales, Turks & Caicos (airport code, PLS), she loves spending more time down on the island!]

TWS: If you had to pick just one thing that makes Turks & Caicos special, what is it and why?

SF: I don’t think it’s possible to pick just one thing about Turks & Caicos that makes it so special…  I have never seen a more gorgeous ocean or beach than in Turks.  The people are phenomenal, hotels/resorts are spectacular, diving/snorkeling is fantastic and the food is delicious! If you’re looking for nightlife you are able to find it with some wine-bars, a sports pub, casino or dance club – but, this is a very peaceful/relaxing destination that can be enjoyed by everyone!

TWS: For someone who is visiting Turks & Caicos for the first time, what are the can’t-miss attractions / experiences and what could they skip if they have limited time?

SF: Spending the day on Grace Bay Beach is a must – the water is crystal clear and with the islands being surrounded by one of the most extensive coral reef systems worldwide they are ranked as one of the premier diving locations in the world.  A must would be a snorkel trip around the island. Caicos Dream Tours are perfect and will pick you up at your hotel.  Their tours allow you to snorkel, dive for conch and then go to a secluded island where you can eat the conch… If you’re lucky you will see a dolphin, stingrays, iguanas, lemon sharks and more! It’s just the perfect way to see the island and the gorgeous water!  Big Blue Unlimited has a kayaking tour as well as some sailboat excursions that are also fantastic!

TWS: What’s the secret to getting a hotel deal in Turks & Caicos?

SF: The secret to getting deals a great deal in Turks is to just look at our site thru the package path.  We have a tremendous amount of sales to the island and now with JetBlue flying nonstop from JFK and BOS as well as Continental, US Airways and American adding lift, there isn’t an issue getting to the destination.  Prices as better than ever to fly to the island, so booking a package deal (hotel + air) is the way to go!

TWS: You visit lots and lots of hotels – any favorites?

SF: Every hotel is very unique in its own way. Turks has a LOT of phenomenal properties, each one is nicer than the next for different reasons and what one is looking for…  My personal favorite property is The Regent Palms where the staff is incredible, the rooms and suites are larger than my apartment and the food at the pool bar as well as Parallel23 (Tropical Fusion Dining) can’t be beat!

TWS: Tell us your number-one favorite restaurant in Turks & Caicos and what menu item a visitor has to try.

SF:  If you’re looking for the best place to see sunset and grab a drink or a light dinner, your choice should be Somewhere, which is located at Coral Gardens on the beach.  It’s a reasonable and perfect place to spend the evening!  Mango Reef is another fabulous restaurant located at the Alexandra Resort, right on the beach.  They have local cuisine and everything is good!

TWS:  What’s a secret the locals know but tourists don’t?

SF:By renting a boat you are able to be in the middle of the ocean and feel like you’re the only people there… You are able to pull the boat up to an island and spend the day without being disturbed by anyone, except maybe a sand dollar or two…

TWS: Do you know the Roaming Gnome personally? What is his favorite thing about Turks & Caicos?

SF: Oh yes, the Roaming Gnome and I go way back – we’re old chaps!  His favorite thing about the destination is the food & the different cocktails!  Hands down for food is the conch!  Whether its conch salad, conch fritters, cracked conch, conch soup or conch chowder – it is fresh and delicious!  Cocktails may be a bit of a challenge to pick just one…  There are the Beet Mojitos at Ocean Club West or the Korner’s Special at Hemingway’s at The Sands – and the gnome never goes wrong with a Turks Head beer!
