2003: Disney’s Pop Century Resort
Editor’s Note: This post is part 33 in a forty-part blog series in celebration of Walt Disney World Resort’s upcoming 40th Anniversary. Please welcome to The Window Seat Diane Luba, Walt Disney World Moms Panel Guest Author.
On December 14, 2003 Disney’s Pop Century Resort opened its “time capsules” to guests. Inspired by icons that salute many of the 20th-century popular culture crazes, experience why this Disney Value Resort hotel is a “groovy” place for you and your family to stay during your next Walt Disney World Resort vacation.
Disney’s Pop Century Resort is my favorite value resort! I love the fun and retro theme which represents the decades of the 1950s through the 1990s! With the loud and vibrant colors mixed with the larger-than-life pop culture icons, the resort just screams “FUN!”
When entering the lobby, you will instantly take a stroll down memory lane as you enjoy the memorabilia and pictures representing many decades. As you reminisce the years gone by, don’t be surprised if the Cast Members suddenly start dancing to ‘The Hustle!’ You’ll want to join in on the fun, so be sure to brush up on your moves before you arrive at Pop Century!
You will definitely want to spend some time exploring this resort with your family. Make sure to bring your camera along when you walk through the decades as there will be endless photo opportunities! You’ll encounter giant icons such as a Big Wheel, bowling pins, Play-Doh, Yo-Yos, Rubik’s cubes – and yes, a foosball table! There are also characters from Lady and the Tramp and Jungle Book to enjoy.
This resort boasts three themed swimming pools. The main pool in the 60’s section, called the Hippy Dippy Pool, is shaped like a flower. It is surrounded by water-squirting daisies, a wading pool for the little ones and a ping-pong table. There are also two “quiet” pools located at the resort – the Bowling Pin Pool, which is appropriately found in the 50’s section, and the Computer Pool located in the 80’s and 90’s section.
The rooms feature either two double beds or one king bed, a small table with two chairs and a flat screen TV. Other amenities include a hair dryer, an iron with ironing board and a wall safe. There is also a vanity area with a sink that is separate from the bathroom. Refrigerators are not included in the value rooms, but are available for an additional cost upon request. The room capacity is four people, but if you have more members in your family, don’t worry. It is easy to reserve two rooms with an adjoining interior door which will instantly double your space (and bathrooms!).
One of my favorite features of this resort is the awesome food court. There is something for everyone to choose from, even the pickiest of eaters. A favorite of mine is the “Mom’s Night Out” dinner which serves comfort food in a classic TV dinner tray. For a funky ending to your meal, you must try their signature dessert – the tie dye cheesecake. Yum! For those that would prefer to hang out in your room for dinner, pizza delivery is available.
Connecting the food court and lobby, you’ll find a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs and other goodies. This is a great place to purchase items such as autograph books or trading pins before heading out to the parks!
Convenient bus transportation is located at this resort which will bring you to all the theme parks, water parks and Downtown Disney.
Overall, I am sure you will find that Pop Century is a family and budget friendly resort. You and your family will have a groovy time for sure!
