"Definitely a good value for SF Downtown"
I stayed at the HV for 4 nights while attending a conference. I managed to walk to the convention center & back (about a 15 min brisk walk each way) so no complaints there! The room was clean, very quiet, spacious, equipped with a refrigerator, wide screen TV (no HBO or pay TV!) & decent/new bathroom fixtures/bath robes. Free internet worked well but my room had almost no cell phone reception (if you have Verizon you should be OK!) as it was located at the back of the building facing taller adjacent structures. Various eateries including one of my favorites (Le Colonial) are withing a few blocks of the hotel. The central air system is antiquated & does not have a thermostat (only an ON or OFF setting!!).

"Cute Hotel, Interesting Location"
Hotel Bijou is a cute, small boutique hotel that suited our needs for our trip to San Francisco. The rooms were not large, but they were clean and bathroom was fine. The beds were not the most comfortable, but not terrible either. We were there for 3 nights and never able to connect to the WiFi for more than a second, which was frustrating, luckily we did not have much business to do on line at the time. The one thing I wish I have known, although it never became a huge problem, was that hotel is on the edge of the Tenderloin District. What that means is that the neighboring blocks, including the block that the hotel is on, is SWARMING with homeless, alcoholics and meth addicts. I am not exaggerating when I say that there could be as many as 30 of these people on any given block, which was a bit alarming and shocking. It was like NYC back in the very early 80's. We had no issues or real encounters with these people, but we did not spend much time in that area. It is a short one block walk to Union Square area and the cable car and bus. Right around the corner is MikkellerBar at 34 Mason St, which serves good food and many different varieties of craft beer. I think it just opened 4 months ago in a large warehouse type space. Also the BEST Vietnamese restaurant, Tin Vietnamese at 937 Howard Street, is just a few blocks away and should NOT be missed. We ate two meals there and thoroughly enjoyed every bite!

"Great hotel in Union Square"
We celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary by spending a weekend in SF. At check-in, the attendant upgraded us to the Emperor's Level with a city view. Awesome! The hotel room was clean, comfy bed. The Emperor's Level lounge was great (free continental breakfast and daily wine and cheese reception). The hotel was central to shops, restaurants, BART station, Powell cable car line.

"In the heart of Union Square"
Very nice hotel in the heart of Union Square.  It is well within walking distance of all the shopping, the galleries and theaters, and restaurants located downtown.  You are going to pay at least $200 to stay in the Union Square area and the Villa Florence has a very competitive rate for where it was located, a half block from Union Square Park.  We just parked our car at the O' Farrell parking lot and never went back to the car for our stay.  A great jumping off point if you want to explore the area downtown.  Be advised that the rooms shown on the website are all street facing and get a lot of natural sun light but many of the rooms are interior facing and you will not get any views.  The rooms by the elevators were the least impressive since they are very small.  It was mostly just a room with a bed, the space around the bed and adjoining bathroom.  The one window faces a brick wall.  We were lucky enough to switch to an interior room with more space, natural light, and windows.  The Bar Norcini located in the lobby was a wonderful place to share a pizza and drink with a loved one before hitting the streets without needing to make reservations or wait long.  Wifi access was available but our smartphones couldn't get a strong enough signal to surf the web with any consistency.  Overall, a good place to stay if you want to be in the heart of downtown San Francisco.

"Great location, old, not kid friendly"
We got the hotel because of its history and location,  can't beat that!  Staff was good, but not the most courteous.  Service on the front desk and room service was average.  The deluxe room we got was big and the bathroom was adequate.  There was a huge closet, which I would have preferred to be part of the room.  We were traveling with two young kids, and could see that the cleaning everyday would leave some of the crumbs in the room ( although the kids got into all the corners). The concierge was good, but again, not the best. The hotel was not the most kid friendly.  Room service had hardly anything for kids, the lobby seemed too grave for the kids to have fun in and there is a general lack of open spaces ( no pool, etc). Parking was expensive and not the most convenient in terms of wait time.  We had to wait for our car for more than 10 mins after having called for it half an hour earlier. All in all, we had a comfortable stay, but will probably try a different hotel when we are in San Francisco next time.  For the money, it didn't seem fit for us traveling with two young kids.
