Signature Trips: American Hiking Society
American Hiking Society gives you the chance get out and give back with other volunteers who share your passion for the outdoors. You'll have the time of your life while building new friendships, giving back to the environment, and making memories that will last a lifetime. And because American Hiking Society trips are so affordable ($275 each), the $5,000 grant can be used to fund you and several other people! Apply as a group with your kids, your community group, or a local hiking club.
You don't need any special skills or prior experience--just a willingness to get dirty and the desire to leave our nation's trails better than you found them. Volunteers will assist with the design and building of wilderness hiking trails under the leadership and guidance of trails professionals.
The $5,000 Travel for Good voluntourism grant can be used for any trip that supports the state of Washington or the state of Alaska. Plus, American Hiking Society has over 70 other trips available for purchase.
Alaska Trail Work
$275
6 - 10 days
American Hiking Society is offering six opportunities in the state of Alaska to get outside and give back to America's public lands. Bring your friends or family to explore the wild places of The Last Frontier, like iconic Denali National Park, Kodiak Island, the second largest island in the U.S., or the Iditarod National Historic Trail, site of the famous dog sled race.
Watch nesting puffins on a grassy cliff, catch a humpback whale in full breach, see salmon leap from the water, or photograph a sea otter eating shellfish. Plus, enjoy the satisfaction of building and preserving hiking trails that will benefit generations to come.
Goals: In 2011, American Hiking hopes to build and maintain over 18 miles of hiking trails in the state of Alaska through volunteer trail work.
