"Unique boutique"
Diva was a cool hotel that is old but revamped.  My friend and I stayed 5 nights over the Labor Day weekend and found it to be excellent.  Every staff person we saw, passed in the hall, or spoke to was friendly, courteous and helpful.  The location is perfect...steps away from union square shopping, dining and clubbing, two blocks from the Powell Station metro/Bart train/cable car lines, two blocks away from the trolleybus line, and always felt safe with lots of people nearby.  We chose a room on the backside of he hotel so it would be less noisy.  It was still a bit noisy on the third floor, but that's typical in a busy city area.  The room was retro chic: lots of silver, purple and greys.  We paid a tiny bit extra for the exec king room (an extra 100 sq. feet) and were really glad for it.  The king bed was comfortable and plenty spacious  for two of us to share without feeling cramped or weird.  The shades were unique and blocked out the light well for sleeping in.  The shower was really great; lots of hot water, perfect pressure so you weren't annoyed trying to rinse the conditioner out of your hair, and no stray squirts of water out of he side of the shower head.  The shower and toilet are separate from the vanity area, which is always a plus when you share a room.  The sink was very deep, so no water splattering all over the vanity.  Individual makeup remover wipes were stocked daily, as were the individual coffee servings for the coffee maker. A small fridge allowed us to go buy water, sodas, and fancy coffee creamer for the room(so I saved money by not hitting the Starbucks off the lobby every day).   There is also a fancy Mexican restaurant off the lobby that had excellent food, but was a little cramped. Robes and freshly packaged slippers were a really nice touch.  I didnt have to worry about getting my white socks dirty as is the usual case even in 4 star hotels.  And I didn't have to go barefoot to avoid it.   My only recommendation for improvement would be some hooks in the bathroom to hang the robe on while you shower and to hang up any clothes you don't want to toss on the floor or set on the toilet.

"Exactly what I expected!"
The Best Western Hotel California is an older hotel on Geary Street three blocks from Union Square and six blocks from the powell Street BART station/Powell cable car terminus. It is ideally suited for anyone who plans to tour the entire city using public transportation. It is reasonably priced, the beds were comfortable, the rooms were clean, and the breakfast buffet was great. I appreciated the wi-fi connection, the safe in the room and the refridgerator (my wife, three teenage sons and I stayed in the king-queen suite). No five star accomodations by any means, but that was not what I wanted. I wanted a nice, reasonably inexpensive place to stay in the heart of the city without all of the unnecessary and expensive glitz. Keep in mind: the street noise is substantial at the Hotel California. Also, the neighborhood gets a little shetchy as you go south and west of the hotel (into the Tenderloin neighborhood) and it appeared as though the "sketchiness" extended to the hotel late at night. Neither factor bothered us much...we were exhausted from full days and in bed by 10 pm, and there is not much we wanted to see in the Tenderloin anyway. Finally, the staff was helpful and friendly. I would stay there again.

Love the decor, it's a bit noisy though. Make sure to check the size of the bathroom when you check in. Some of the rooms has only a sink that fits a preschooler. Staffs are very accommodating if you ask.

"Nice Hotel Overall"
We stayed at the Serrano for several nights, it was overall satisfying. The hotel is in the union square vicinity, and it was only around $8 to Uber to Fisherman's wharf. It cost me $14 w/ tip to take a cab back from the wharf, so stick with Uber. The hotel has a gastropub, Jasper's, downstairs which had good food and beers on tap. I would skip the room service route, additional charges you can avoid if you go downstairs to the restaurant which is where the room service is from, and pick up your food or you can go across the street to starbucks, or the pizza place. The room was nice, but quite small. It's in a big city though, so I didn't expect a large room. We rented a car and went to Napa for a day and night and stayed at a Hawthorne suites. The spaciousness of that room was a welcome relief for a night, and then we came back to the Serrano for our last two nights. One annoyance I recall was the charges to use their internet and computers/printers. I had to print tickets for a 49ers game as well as boarding passes. Their daily service charges are significant enough to cover this service for their guests and I felt i was being nickel and dimed to print a total of 4 pages....But overall a good hotel.

"Great location in Union Square!"
Hotel Abri is central to everything in Union Square! A great place for couples or a friends getaways. The staff were great and incredibly helpful throughout our stay. Loved the complimentary happy hour shots! Our suite was clean and comfortable for a renovated boutique hotel. I highly recommend booking if you're the type wanting to spend the day exploring the city and be out all day as it's within walking distance for just about every activity. If you want onsite services like a day spa or pool, you'll want to look somewhere else.
