The property is beautiful, very friendly staff. there is a buzzing sound going off and with no phone in the room you have to go down to the first floor to tell someone. restrooms are extremely clean and well stocked.

Hostel in an Old Mansion Has its Pros and Cons

Pros: Location is great for conferences or Old Town. Setting is cool. Staff are very nice, accommodating young people who try hard to please. Beds okay.
Cons: Get new locks ASAP!! Juice with breakfast?
Location: 10th & H street is in downtown, walking distance to convention center and conference hotels, and short taxi ride to Capitol. Old Town also nearby.
The Sacramento Hostel is in a fine old mansion. That's fun even though the place is a bit run down at the heels. The staff are pleasant and helpful and try hard to keep the old building running. The keypad on my door worked well at first until about 6 a.m. when I couldn't get out of the room to go to the bathroom down the hall. Yes, bathrooms are not in the room (it is, after all, a hostel...). Eventually the door opened, but then I couldn't get back in! After many tries I trekked down to the front desk in my pajamas and got the night clerk, a young lady who came up and entered the code multiple times and also couldn't get in!! She went down to call the manager & then it worked for me. I made sure to have all I needed for the day before next leaving the room and was promised that the loose keypad would be fixed. It wasn't by the time I got back and I was angry but a guy and woman on staff went up, couldn't get it, took a hammer and screwdriver to it and eventually got it open. The guy proceeded to tighten everything up and it worked for about 2 or three entries and exits after which the latch wouldn't release again. The electronic code always worked but something wasn't releasing the latch. At that point they moved me to the room next door (the old master bedroom of the house!) and helped haul my stuff over there. And the guy completely changed the lock. The next day a new desk clerk said that they have multiple issues with the locks and are replacing them.
