"Old World Elegance"
We just returned from a very enjoyable three night stay at the Deluxe. The hotel is very elegant and bright, with an emphasis on light colours, chandeliers and gold trim. The staff was very friendly and helpful, always greeting us with a "Welcome back," which made us feel more at home. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the hotel was very quiet at night. Some rooms are small, but our "deluxe" room was a perfect size. The Hotel Deluxe is nicely located, close to local transit, slightly out of the downtown core but easily within a 10 minute walk of Nob Hill, the Pearl District, or downtown restaurants. The streets around the hotel are clean, quiet and safe. We walked all over the area and never felt apprehensive. A daily transit pass costs $5 and this does come in handy; use the MAX to get out to the zoo, or over to Lloyd's Mall on the east side of the river, to a basketball game or even for a quick fix at VooDoo Donuts! Next time we are in Portland, we will definitely be heading back to the Hotel Deluxe.

"This hotel replaces the Governor Hotel."
I loved the Governor,, and this hotel is very different. It is much more contemporary and makes better use of the ballroom space that used to exist. It has its own comfortable bar and lounge, but Jake's Restaurant and Bar have also been incorporated into the main floor. Expedia sent an email asking what feature was most important to us, and I replied 'view'. We were given an upgrade that featured a large terrace facing east toward downtown. Wonderful!! It is not the Governor but it is a very nice hotel in an historic building with many touches of elegance.
