" Not as bad as previous reviews"
Hotel was not terrible. Location was in the city, plenty of harmless entertainment from locals outside(homeless, working ladies, etc...), but found this throughout the city. within walking distance to tourist sites, restaurants and safe public parking nearby. Bed and bathroom were clean, staff was ok and coffee was free. Not a bad place to stay for the price.

"Great hotel in a not so great location"
Nothing at all negative about the hotel, staff, etc. but it is in a neighborhood that is dodgy with many people on the street making noise all night. I didn't feel unsafe, but some folks might.

"T. M. I."
At times I could hear the people staying in the rooms next to mine very clear. I needed to keep the TV on in the back groung to keep my attention out of their conversations. The neiborhood became more shady after dark. But I did not feel I was in any real danger.Ice machine was across thye street at a different hotel.

"Great hotel, friendly staff, would be back"
Being in a "ghetto" part of San Francisco (Little Saigon), I was somewhat hesitant to stay here, but I'm SO glad I did. It would only be ghetto if you were hanging out on the blocks outside your hotel, but walking the few blocks to shopping didn't make me feel even slightly unsafe. BEST pool, super warm so even with the winds of San Fran it feels good, room was very clean, beds were pretty comfy, FREE PARKING (unheard of in San Fran), and staff was VERY friendly and helpful. There was an event happening at the hotel the Saturday we were staying there. The pool was closed off and there was loud music so that was frustrating. We decided to go out instead of relax at the hotel because of this. I voiced my frustration politely to the front desk as well as the manager the next day, saying that I wished we would have been informed of the event because didn't get to relax like we had wanted and had to make other arrangements. They were VERY nice about it & said they weren't even informed of the event until the morning of and so they had no chance to warn guests, as they always do. They seemed frustrated themselves so I don't think this is a common issue. And even with us having to change our plans, I will absolutely be back. One of the most relaxing trips I have had in San Fran to date, a big thanks to this hotel!

My boyfriend & I just returned from a 3-night stay at The Opal. We were hesitant at first because of the reviews we'd read, but for the price, we wanted to check it out. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. We stayed in a king-sized, no smoking room. Admittedly, it was small, but the right size for two people, and besides, we were out exploring the city most of the day, so we didn't need much room just for a place to sleep and shower. The room was clean, just old-fashioned. Although we were directly across from the elevator, we didn't hear any noises, which was a definite plus. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful during check-in/out. The continental breakfast leaves a little to be desired-it's stocked mostly with pastries, like English muffins and bagels, no meat. The location of the hotel is fairly ideal-a quick, cheap bus ride gets you close to Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown and the bus stop is conveniently located a few steps from the hotel's front doors. We'd read about the homeless population being so heavily congregated near the hotel, and it was true, but it's just a characteristic of that part of town. Once you leave The Opal and get into other parts of the city it gets better. We never felt unsafe. San Francisco is great and we recommend giving The Opal a try!

"good reasonable hotel"
Hotel seemed different, it had changed management-no longer as 'quirky' as I remembered. Reasonable room, price/quality adequate (this is San Francisco and it was considered high season).'

"Nice hotel easily reached by BART from the airport"
Having to depend on public transportation, this hotel is right next to BART, Street cars, and buses. It is "downtown" close to many tourist destinations but for people who are not used to big city noises or seeing a' great diversity of people, stay away from the downtown area.. We found the old architecture charming---it is an old hotel with many flourishes, decorated ceilings, lots of beveled mirrors in hallways next to the elevators, etc. It was clean and functioning and the personnel cordial and helpful. The hotel restaurant is very good, not inexpensive, More upscale.

"Very inexpensive, sketchy neighborhood, but good value"
The hotel is a few blocks off of the I-280 7th St. exit and a few blocks from the Tenderloin. Thus, do not expect a terrific neighborhood. However, it was not bad. The neighborhood was not too dangerous. My room was in the back, so street noise was not much of a problem. Easy to get to: 3 blocks from the Civic Center BART station. A tremendous value for money. Only problem was I was probably the first person to get up the day I left, so it took about 20 minutes for the hot water to get hot. No problems the other days. Oh - The "free internet" was beyond useless. When I've got a sketchy Internet connection, I check it against the ICSI Netalyzer. The connection was so bad the test could not complete. I ended up using my iPad's personal hotspot. Good Verizon coverage ;-)
