We originally booked for 2 nights, but left early & only stayed for 1. We have very mixed feelings about our time at Big Meadows Lodge.
I was fully aware of the rustic aesthetic when I booked the room, but the 3-star rating label is misleading. Also, charging over $350 for two nights in a room with no air conditioning, no TV, and such a general lack of amenities is highly unreasonable. When the temp reaches 91 during the day, and humidity is through the roof, a small fan isn’t going to diminish how gross the air feels in the room. My unworn clothes were literally damp from the humidity when I unpacked my bag at home Saturday night.
The pizza at the taproom is not great, but the local beer offerings were good though. I would not describe this place as “dog friendly” either, since we had to provide our own water bowl for our dog. Dinner at the restaurant was great and the Shenandoah wine was excellent, however $6 for 3 shrimp is a tad steep especially when they aren’t locally sourced. The breakfast food was subpar to put it nicely, but the coffee was good.
All of our waiters and waitresses were excellent and thankfully made up for the demonic hostess (yep, as in a demon from the underworld) who is extremely rude to patrons as they attempt to get a table at the restaurant. I am confident that this place would not get half of the business it does if there were other food options within a 1 hour drive. The restaurants were also without a/c. We will not stay here again.

Hotel was about what we expected, some of the dining and Tap Room staff were not what we expected. One waitress was nice but not very helpful, the soda was flat THREE times, but the employees in the Tap Room really ticked off our party of twelve. The waitress was “snotty” and not very helpful. We sensed that she didn’t care for some of our presence there, so we left without buying anything.
When we asked what football game would be shown Saturday, the bartenders and manager acted like we asked them to explain nuclear physics to us. They “didn’t know” but they were controlling the game choice, even the snotty waitress gave us a costic comment, and she wasn’t even part of the conversation. We really felt like valued customers! After that treatment, we decided we were not ever going to patronize the Tap Room or Big Meadows Lodge. We did get to see our game. We brought our own TV and antenna.
I understand that when you are a monopoly you don’t need to be as customer oriented as you do in a competive market, but our expience was horrible. As I’m sure you have guessed by now, and probably don’t care, we aren’t coming back. We do plan to share our experience with friends and everyone we come in contact with.
