Afternoon at the Nishi-Hongwanji Temple

Pros: Nothing fancy, reasonably priced, conveniently located to downtown attractions, breakfast included.
Cons: Hard to find on a tourist map.
Location: See experience above.
The Kyoto Tower Hotel Annex is a small unpretentious, but comfortable hotel close to the station and within walking distance of the temple. Unlike the better known attractions in Kyoto, it's free and I practically had the place to myself. I really enjoyed its peaceful, almost religious solitude. The elaborately decorated entrance gate was its main attraction and should not be missed. Not speaking a word of Japanese, I appreciated the convenience of the variety of eating places available in one location under the station.
