"Love this place."
Great place. Great pool. There's a little beach in the back that's fun for snorkeling. We stayed here in 2014 and again in 2015. We had a great time.

"Relaxing Hotel"
Check-in, the stay, and the check-out was totally painless. This was our second time at this hotel. The location was perfect if you want very little rain and consistantly comfortable temperatures.

"Beautiful Facility and Beach"
This is a fantastic hotel: Beautiful, spacious room, with large covered patio looking over the beach. The staff was incredibly kind, helpful and always upbeat. A fee of $24 allows you to "self-park", but also provides in-room Wifi, and a bunch of coupons for 2 free coffees per day, 2 complementary Mai Tais (one time), and discounts off various rentals (snorkeling gear if needed, golf, spa...). Beach towels provided and staff direct you to reclining chairs with umbrellas they set up on the beach (if you get one of the roughly 30-40 umbrellas set up. If not, they move the other 50 or chairs to shaded areas!). Water current is strong at Hapuna, but there is an arrangement with Mauna Kae, the adjoining resort only a 2 minute drive away. There, the snorkeling was spectacular! The hotel is only a half hour drive from Waimea, and perhaps 45-60 minutes to Kona and the same for Polulu Valley or Wapio Valley for terrific hour hikes down to the beach. We stayed a week on the Big Island, but only three nights at this resort. I wish we had stayed here for the week, and drove to the Hilo area attractions (Volcano, helicopter, zip line, lava tubes, rain forest hike). My only criticism involves food options. No breakfast provided, though its grab and go cafe provided ample selections at only modestly pricey rates. The Beach Bar had fine food, and a great view of the setting sun, but was not open on Thursday and Friday nights:(! Overall, we found it to be a little slice of paradise.

This hotel has a beautiful view with a very friendly and helpful staff. I would highly recommend for all ages. The pool area is big and well maintained. There were complimentary activities available through out the day. I certainly hope to stay there again soon.

"Expansive Resort"
The resort is expansive, pleasant to walk around, evening can be pleasantly spent walking around the expansive well landscaped and maintained grounds. There is no sandy shore beach but the lagoon is adequate for beach lounging and the cove is OK for snorkeling. You will have to get use to the native birds making a racket early morning and evenings depending on hotel and room location

"Paradise found at the Fairmont Orchid on Kona"
We booked our vacation last minute for a late anniversary celebration. We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid in their garden view room, fist floor. Our view was of the beautiful gardens with a partial view of a waterfall, and the sounds of the waterfall was relaxing from our private patio. The service was excellent in all aspects of the hotel, but bring lots of tip money. The pool, and spa were very nice. The beach is beautiful with good snorkeling. The restaurants are pricey, the hotel fee of $25 does include your parking, one hour of snorkeling gear, and kayaking. The buffet is also pricey if you don't include in your package. We were unaware that the buffet could be included. If you book through the hotel you can include the buffet, but apparently not in the package that TripAdvisor offered, so we ate off the hotel premises. We would recommended this hotel and would stay again.

"This is place is great, but nothing is perfect"
My wife and I had dinner here a couple of times on previous trips to the Big Island and have since stayed for a week on three occasions.  We have enjoyed the Plumeria and Mt view rooms.  The rooms are large, comfortable and filled with all the amenities we need.  Service is transparent.   There are three principle restaurants with varied results.  Manta (B&D) is pretty good, but you never feel the staff cares.  Hua Tree (L) has a limited menu, but a great staff, and fantastic location.  Monettes (D) is fantastic but pricey.  All have million dollar views.  The resort location on basically a private lagoon is spectacular.  That you can get a four star meal over looking said lagoon is priceless.   There are more expensive resorts on the Big Island, but none have as good a location.   There are some irksome rules at Mauna Kea,ex: the pool area is closed at 6 (seriously?) even the Marriott doesn't do that.  There are several other nice resorts (fairmont, mauna lea and even the Four Seasons(we like to hit the Four Seasons for L&D on trips to and fro Kona and the harbor)) nearby with more great restaurants.  You can stay a week, eat at great restaurants and not dine twice at the same place.  Of course this takes more time and effort than staying at the Mauna Kea.   When school is out there are lots of kids, when school is in the average age is AARP.   If you want a beautiful room, in a beautiful place, with pretty good food this is a great choice.  There are other choices who say NO less, but it will cost you.

"Economical Hotel"
The employees are very nice. This is a reasonably priced hotel. Nothing fancy. The furnishings are old but clean and still useable. Pool is always very cold. Few customers use it. But the Pacific Ocean is only a block away. We would stay again because the location is near family and the ocean.
