As a wise wanderer equally enamored by our own continent's complexities as those across far oceans, you find Mexico's rich culture, and certainly its cuisine, simultaneously familiar and fascinating. You've felt enlivened by the rousing rhythms of a mariachi band, yet you know it was merely a nod to the joyful atmosphere of a live music-filled plaza in historic Guadalajara, the true home of mariachi. Many a food truck torta has sated your appetite, but none have been quite like Guadalajara's signature sauce-smothered torta ahogados. And while you've sipped tequilas silver and gold, you know down in Jalisco there are working distilleries aside agave fields, and after gazing over their otherworldly spiked landscapes for yourself, you'll go home with a new respect for the heady spirit. Satisfy such a yearning to immerse yourself in authentic Mexican culture by booking one of our great downtown Guadalajara hotels. Delve in with your curiosity piqued, your enchantment aroused, and a litany of questions ready to be answered.
The sunshine, mild temperatures, and infrequent rain that characterize Guadalajara's weather November through May make winter and spring both ideal seasons to visit. With even the coolest daytime temperatures in the mid- to high-70s Fahrenheit, the city is an especially appealing winter destination if you're longing to escape a cold climate. The hottest month is May, when highs generally stay below 90 F. June through October is the rainy season, with heavy and frequent storms at their peak in July. But that certainly doesn't make those months undesirable. You may well find Guadalajara's plazas and parks, colonial monuments, and its centerpiece 16th-century cathedral all the more beautiful under a hazy veil, the dust washed away and tourist crowds reduced to just a few umbrella-shrouded companions. Furthermore, when you book one of our Guadalajara downtown hotels in the historic district, such as the stunning Hotel De Mendoza, you won't have far to walk when you're ready to retreat from the rain. Some other seasonal considerations: Guadalajara hosts a vibrant cultural festival throughout the month of May, and celebrates its musical heritage with a Mariachi Festival in August.
Guadalajara is approximately 200 miles inland — eastward and upward in elevation — from the popular coastal resort city of Puerto Vallarta. Flights between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta take less than an hour, so a quick side trip is a viable option. Many of our hotels, including Del Carmen Concept Hotel in Guadalajara, will gladly arrange airport shuttle services to make such a trip easy. Imagine the vibrant visual parade comprising a morning photographing the mural-covered walls of Guadalajara's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hospicio Cabanas, and an afternoon snorkeling over colorful corals off one of PV's sandy beaches. Alternatively, take an unforgettable road trip through rugged and rural Jalisco. A straightforward drive along the modern highways connecting Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara will take five to six hours. Hit the road early and you can fit in a side trip to the rural town of Tequila or nearby Amatitan, both centuries-old centers of agave cultivation and distillery.
