"Beautiful Resort, excellent staff!"
Took my fiance' who had never been to Mexico. I had not stayed at this resort before, but would love to come back again. Resort is beautiful, well kept, and the staff is more than willing to do whatever it takes to make you comfortable. The bed was a bit hard for me, and so we mentioned it at the front desk. About 20 minutes later there was a knock at the door and the housekeeper came in to place a padded topper on the bed. We were very surprised, but then about 20 minutes after that we received a call from the front desk asking if the padded topper had been put on, and if that didn't help to let them know and they would see what else they could do. The choices for dinner were Italian, Indian, Asian, French, Mexican and what they called the Lobster House, so having a variety of good food was never a problem. They had a different type of show every night starting at 9pm, and they were all very entertaining. And during the afternoons and evenings before the shows there were a variety of different bands playing around the resort. The staff made you feel welcome, like they already knew you and never acted as if you were an inconvenience to them. Wonderful resort, and we will go again.

"Third visit - Superb resort still, food was lacking this time"
Just returned from our 3rd visit in 3 years to Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso. Don't get me wrong, this hotel is the epitome of luxury and cannot be beat in the Riviera Maya/Cancun area. To make this easier for everyone, I'll list the pros and cons for this visit: PROS: Service was impeccable. Even better than the last two stays. None of the staff ever said "NO" to any request we had. For instance, if a bartender didn't know how to make a drink, they found out and brought it to us. If my wife wanted a special dish that wasn't on the menu, it was prepared for her. If we wanted 10 bottles of water delivered to the room each night, it was done with a smile. The grounds are gorgeous and well manicured as ever. Top shelf liquor was more than abundant and available at all the bars. Star Friends were exceptionally friendly and took time to talk to the guests. We learned a lot about them. Amazingly, Eder remembered our names from our previous two visits. The rooms were immaculate. Maid service and turndown service was incredible. Not a piece of dust could be found anywhere. Overall, the staff was incredibly friendly. Especially Olivia, one of the chefs. She remembered us from previous visits as well. One day, my wife wasn't feeling well and didn't want lunch. Olivia prepared her a bowl of plain white rice with some carrots just so she would eat something. It was such a nice touch. The rest of the staff was always smiling and willing to assist with anything one could possibly need. CONS: The food has gone downhill severely! We were blown away by the food at all 4 restaurants and the buffets during out last visit in September 2011. This time, we were very disappointed and actually lost weight for a 6 day stay at an all-inclusive. The Italian was inedible as everything was cooked in either a cream or butter sauce. The lamb was hard and had no taste. Japanese was dull, with the quality of the sushi tasting somewhat downgraded from our last visit. The Gourmet too was not up to par, especially as this was our favorite the last 2 visits. The french onion soup tasted like bathwater, the lamb again was hard and had no taste. The other dishes our party had were all sent back or not eaten. The breakfast buffet was still pretty good, although they really need to change the options every few days...its the same food over and over. Of all the restaurants, Tony's was the best--with the steaks, scallops, and fish all being cooked perfectly and very tasty. Still, overall, we were very disappointed in the food, and might not come back for a 4th visit because of it. There was more a problem getting lounge chairs by the pool during this visit. After 8am, all the cabanas were taken (with nobody sitting in them, just books reserving them), and after 9am, all the other chairs were taken. The resort really needs to monitor this and remove towels that have not been used after a certain amount of time. Overall, the visit was great and we enjoyed every moment of it. The food was a big disappointment, but we tried to not let it ruin our trip. I would still recommend this resort out of all the other 5 star resorts in Riviera Maya. Hopefully, the resort will invest in better quality food and/or change their menus.

"Travel like a star; Feel right at home."
Last month, my husband and I had the pleasure of celebrating our tenth anniversary with five nights at The Tides. We have traveled all over the world and have never seen or experienced a place like this. The Tides has a magical atmosphere that feels dreamy, serene, and extremely upscale. We did not have to choose between the beach and the jungle; at The Tides we enjoyed both! The stunning entrance and common areas of the property open onto a beautiful beach dotted with personal cabanas and hammock beds. The walk to our villa on the meandering path through the jungle was a joy every time we took it! Our room was lovely, homey, and very comfortable. We loved having our own patio, hammock, heated pool and dining area. From the exquisite homemade natural soaps to the earthy copal incense, The Tides does not miss a detail and made us feel right at home. We did not experience bug problems (other than some ants the first couple of days), but we did see an impressive array of wildlife (mostly birds and geckos) around our patio area! The restaurant was gourmet and everything we had there was wonderful. We usually enjoy a more down-home and local flair when it comes to our food though, so we made trips into town often for cheaper and more varied Yucatan meals. It was nice to mix it up. That said, the kitchen was always willing to fix us something that wasn't on the menu. Ask for shrimp quesadillas- you won't be disappointed! The cocktails were excellent- I am addicted to the chayitos (mojitos made with chaya instead of mint)! The star of The Tides is its spa! The steam rooms and the spa itself are natural and comfortable, and the spa staff is friendly, helpful, and very professional. I experienced three massages while there: the couples blessing massage (not on the website), the Riviera massage, and a relaxation massage. I HIGHLY recommend the couple's blessing massage (I believe it is called Xaman-Ek), which is performed in a lovely outdoor gazebo and followed by a soak in steaming herb baths carved from tree trunks. After the blessing, you are left alone to soak in your personal tubs, and enjoy champagne and chocolate covered strawberries while basking in the glow of it all! I could have chosen this treatment every day! The price is very reasonable, and it is more than worth every penny. The only exception was the pedicure, which was very disappointing (both in execution and in atmosphere). I realize that this is not a nail place (they don't even have a manicure on the menu), but I had specifically waited to get my pedicure here after seeing it online. It was given in a small, bland room with no plants, candles, incense or windows (nor magazines, music, feet jacuzzi), and there was absolutely no foot or leg massage involved, even though the total time is 45 minutes. They only had about eight paint colors to choose from, and the paint I chose seemed old and did not go on well. I did let them know about my disappointment in the pedicure, and although they did not offer to remove it from our bill, they more than made up for it by offering my husband and I a 30-minute relaxation massage. We were satisfied, and the massages were outstanding. Still, skip the pedi and get your usual place to do it for half the price before you leave for Mexico! The service at The Tides is exceptional, and we felt very well attended to. The service personnel stay connected with each other via walkie-talkie, and we joked that every time we did anything, the nearest employee would report it to the rest of the staff so that everyone knew where we were at all times. At one point, we thought maybe they had the monkeys working for them, too. This felt a little strange, but we realized it was so that we would not be bothered with cleaning service or anything else. These folks take their jobs very seriously, and are beyond apologetic if anything goes wrong. Our concierge, Oscar, was incredibly helpful and intuitive. On several occasions he made recommendations that were exactly what we were looking for. I absolutely recommend The Tides if you are looking for something very unique. The rooms will make you feel very at home, while the front of the property (beach/pool/restaurant) will make you feel like a celebrity living la dolce vita (the good life!). But even if the good life gets to be a bit too much for you at times, the fun, eclectic town of Playa del Carmen is just a 10-15 minute drive away, and makes for a great day or night outing.

"A week at the Kore Tulum"
We made our first trip to Mexico with the goal of seeing the Mayan Ruins. We went not knowing what to expect. From the time we got to the Kore Tulum we were treated extremely well. They had moved the time ahead 1 hour but we set our clocks by the world clock. On the day we were to go on our tour we did not know we were running an hour late, needless to say we miss the tour bus. I almost cried as this was the goal of our trip. We returned to the Kore Tulum where we were greeted as always and we explained what happen. The gentleman at the front desk took the information and got us booked on the tour the next day, he saved our entire trip. We could not say enough about the service, at our meals we were always greeted by name and excellent service. On our last full day we noticed they were setting up what looked like for a wedding it was beautiful the table were set the lights were hung and that night we found out it was a special Valentine's dinner for the guests. Taking a vacation away from everything was exactly what we got, it was quite, relaxing and our best vacation to date. Thanks to all at the Kore Tulum for a wonderful time.
