"In the heart of Union Square"
Very nice hotel in the heart of Union Square.  It is well within walking distance of all the shopping, the galleries and theaters, and restaurants located downtown.  You are going to pay at least $200 to stay in the Union Square area and the Villa Florence has a very competitive rate for where it was located, a half block from Union Square Park.  We just parked our car at the O' Farrell parking lot and never went back to the car for our stay.  A great jumping off point if you want to explore the area downtown.  Be advised that the rooms shown on the website are all street facing and get a lot of natural sun light but many of the rooms are interior facing and you will not get any views.  The rooms by the elevators were the least impressive since they are very small.  It was mostly just a room with a bed, the space around the bed and adjoining bathroom.  The one window faces a brick wall.  We were lucky enough to switch to an interior room with more space, natural light, and windows.  The Bar Norcini located in the lobby was a wonderful place to share a pizza and drink with a loved one before hitting the streets without needing to make reservations or wait long.  Wifi access was available but our smartphones couldn't get a strong enough signal to surf the web with any consistency.  Overall, a good place to stay if you want to be in the heart of downtown San Francisco.

"Very nice"
Room was clean, bed was comfortable, good location.   Very pricey during the Nike Women's Marathon.     Room facing the pool was quiet.   A kinda long walk to elevator to get to the room facing pool - but ok.

"Truly a Gem!"
I loved this hotel! The location is awesome near bubbly Union Square. But unlike most hotels in busy areas, this was like a private, quiet retreat. The room was similar to exceptional European inns I have stayed in--Lovely design, intimate experience with amazing personalized service. Complimentary breakfast and evening wine and cheese were a definite plus. All personnel from front desk to housekeeping were highly professional, attentive and friendly. The room was very clean, pleasant and comfortable. I highly recommend the Inn at Union Square and definitely will plan to stay there again on any future trips to San Francisco.

"Very unique"
I was trying to save money by staying at this hotel, and I was not disappointed.  Sure, it's older, but it had updates where I wanted them, like the bathroom.  The bed was very comfortable, and the room was clean and quiet!  What more can I ask for?  Also, the staff went out of their way for a very small request, which I appreciated.

"Nice Hotel, great location"
We stayed 3 nights at the Chancellor Hotel and had a wonderful time. Unfortunately there is no dinner service in the hotel, but there are so many places for dinner to walk to since it's right at Union Square. The shower heads were kind of low, so if you're over 6 ft. tall it's too short for you. No need to rent a car if you're staying here, the trolley and EFF trains are a few blocks away for easy travel around town. Everyone who worked there was so friendly and helpful. I recommend this to anyone looking for a nice, but affordable place downtown.

"Perfect location at a great price"
If you're looking for a clean comfy place to stay while you're seeing the sites of San Francisco, this is (almost) perfect. It's only a block from Union Square, which makes it central to shopping, dining, and transportation. We had a room at the end of a hall on the back of the hotel and it was perfectly quiet. The bed was great, but the pillows were not. When I asked if they had any better pillows, they found me a couple that were a bit better, but if you're fussy, better bring your own. The room was fairly small, but clean. The bathroom was a good size, also very clean. Keep in mind that this is an old hotel, and it shows, but not in negative ways. The only drawback to the room is that it didn't have a mini-fridge. Other than that, if you're looking for a place to sleep and shower before heading out for a day of exploring, it's perfect!

We stayed at the Hotel Union Square which was a cute, friendly and clean boutique hotel. Great HH (wine and music). Important note: if you want an air conditioner in your room you'll have to request it since it's not standard.

"Unique boutique"
Diva was a cool hotel that is old but revamped.  My friend and I stayed 5 nights over the Labor Day weekend and found it to be excellent.  Every staff person we saw, passed in the hall, or spoke to was friendly, courteous and helpful.  The location is perfect...steps away from union square shopping, dining and clubbing, two blocks from the Powell Station metro/Bart train/cable car lines, two blocks away from the trolleybus line, and always felt safe with lots of people nearby.  We chose a room on the backside of he hotel so it would be less noisy.  It was still a bit noisy on the third floor, but that's typical in a busy city area.  The room was retro chic: lots of silver, purple and greys.  We paid a tiny bit extra for the exec king room (an extra 100 sq. feet) and were really glad for it.  The king bed was comfortable and plenty spacious  for two of us to share without feeling cramped or weird.  The shades were unique and blocked out the light well for sleeping in.  The shower was really great; lots of hot water, perfect pressure so you weren't annoyed trying to rinse the conditioner out of your hair, and no stray squirts of water out of he side of the shower head.  The shower and toilet are separate from the vanity area, which is always a plus when you share a room.  The sink was very deep, so no water splattering all over the vanity.  Individual makeup remover wipes were stocked daily, as were the individual coffee servings for the coffee maker. A small fridge allowed us to go buy water, sodas, and fancy coffee creamer for the room(so I saved money by not hitting the Starbucks off the lobby every day).   There is also a fancy Mexican restaurant off the lobby that had excellent food, but was a little cramped. Robes and freshly packaged slippers were a really nice touch.  I didnt have to worry about getting my white socks dirty as is the usual case even in 4 star hotels.  And I didn't have to go barefoot to avoid it.   My only recommendation for improvement would be some hooks in the bathroom to hang the robe on while you shower and to hang up any clothes you don't want to toss on the floor or set on the toilet.
