"Unique boutique"
Diva was a cool hotel that is old but revamped.  My friend and I stayed 5 nights over the Labor Day weekend and found it to be excellent.  Every staff person we saw, passed in the hall, or spoke to was friendly, courteous and helpful.  The location is perfect...steps away from union square shopping, dining and clubbing, two blocks from the Powell Station metro/Bart train/cable car lines, two blocks away from the trolleybus line, and always felt safe with lots of people nearby.  We chose a room on the backside of he hotel so it would be less noisy.  It was still a bit noisy on the third floor, but that's typical in a busy city area.  The room was retro chic: lots of silver, purple and greys.  We paid a tiny bit extra for the exec king room (an extra 100 sq. feet) and were really glad for it.  The king bed was comfortable and plenty spacious  for two of us to share without feeling cramped or weird.  The shades were unique and blocked out the light well for sleeping in.  The shower was really great; lots of hot water, perfect pressure so you weren't annoyed trying to rinse the conditioner out of your hair, and no stray squirts of water out of he side of the shower head.  The shower and toilet are separate from the vanity area, which is always a plus when you share a room.  The sink was very deep, so no water splattering all over the vanity.  Individual makeup remover wipes were stocked daily, as were the individual coffee servings for the coffee maker. A small fridge allowed us to go buy water, sodas, and fancy coffee creamer for the room(so I saved money by not hitting the Starbucks off the lobby every day).   There is also a fancy Mexican restaurant off the lobby that had excellent food, but was a little cramped. Robes and freshly packaged slippers were a really nice touch.  I didnt have to worry about getting my white socks dirty as is the usual case even in 4 star hotels.  And I didn't have to go barefoot to avoid it.   My only recommendation for improvement would be some hooks in the bathroom to hang the robe on while you shower and to hang up any clothes you don't want to toss on the floor or set on the toilet.

"Good hotel, close to the Hilton."
I had a conference at the Hilton, and stayed here because the rate is much lower. The room was clean. The sleeping area and bathroom are both on the smaller side. I had a room on the courtyard on the second floor, which means no view and very little light, but no street noise. However, the walls are rather thin and you do hear your neighbors quite easily. Besides the noise, my major complaint was that the lobby smelled like Irish Spring Soap. The room with two beds is very tight, I would not recommend four people sharing this room.

"A Short Stay"
The room was great but we weren't there very much. The restaurant was under rennovation and management but we were near China Town and it was the Chinese New Year, so exploring for food to stay in the spirit was no problem except for breakfast. We walked many blocks to find a sit-down place to eat. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. it was the first time we ever checked in to a hotel at a machine... swipe the credit card and we were checked in. Because of the breakfast situation, we had walked some distance and returned, we thought, a little bit more than an hour early, BUT the seasonal time had changed and that made checkout an hour earlier (forgot to set my watch forward). We could have still made it out on time but the keycard check-out time system locked us out 6 minutes early too early. The hotel staff was very understanding, reset out card so it would work for 15 more minutes. Fortunately, out things we were packed and ready to grab and go. We have never been locked out of a hotel room because of an automated card system that does more than just let us in and out of a room... We appreciated the free bottled water machines in the hotel. There is also as patio on the roof of the hotel where we drank our coffee and looked at the SF Bay and Embarccadero area. In the other direction was the TransAmerica Building only a few blocks away, and the US Immigration and Customs buildings.

"It's like coming home"
I stayed for 7 nights in a very comfy room with a king size bed, a desk and a nice little bathroom including a shower. On the 5th night I was greeted with "Welcome home!" by the front-desk and it felt a bit like it, especially after a long day of work. The hotel staff was generally nice and very quick in making things possible. The breakfast was complimentary and basically good. Most important for me (and my work) was the WiFi, which worked really good!

"Definitely a good value for SF Downtown"
I stayed at the HV for 4 nights while attending a conference. I managed to walk to the convention center & back (about a 15 min brisk walk each way) so no complaints there! The room was clean, very quiet, spacious, equipped with a refrigerator, wide screen TV (no HBO or pay TV!) & decent/new bathroom fixtures/bath robes. Free internet worked well but my room had almost no cell phone reception (if you have Verizon you should be OK!) as it was located at the back of the building facing taller adjacent structures. Various eateries including one of my favorites (Le Colonial) are withing a few blocks of the hotel. The central air system is antiquated & does not have a thermostat (only an ON or OFF setting!!).

"Highly recommended"
This is an older hotel that's been nicely updated. It's fun, feels fresh and a bit quirky (in a very good way), and is in a pretty good location overall. This hotel was comfortable and clean, and a is great alternative to the big names and facilities that charge so much more. To us, a hotel is a place to sleep and a location to start your day, not a place to stay during the day. So, we'd prefer to skip the high rates and excesses that come with many other hotels in this area.
